10,000 HITS!!!

Wow. It is amazing to see that since June 2009 there have been 10,000 viewers that have visited my blog. I'd like to thank all of the visitors from the U.S. India, Brazil, Germany, the U.K., Canada, France, Russia, Spain & Turkey for taking the time to take a look, no matter what the reason, at my artwork.

My goal going forward is to continue to improve, and develop and most of all decide to share my art more boldly and frequently.  One of the things that I feel that I have learned since opening this blog is that no artist is perfect.  Even the artists that I most admire are still works in progress.  It is possible that there is more to learn and to teach with the imperfection of our art than with our seemingly complete artwork that we strive to execute well.  In this right, I realize that I, myself am attracted more to process artwork accompanied by the finished work.  As I scour blogs daily, searching for inspiration, reference and information, I am beginning to understand that is something I ought to provide as well.

So blogging, is really a learning tool, rather than merely an exhibitors interface.  With that said.  I hope old visitors and new ones alike will enjoy my blog, artwork and journey as I continue to learn and grow.  Thank You.

Model Sheet Madness: Otis Spatulus - version 2.0

After seeing some sick model sheets from the NEW ThunderCats cartoon series, I decided to go back in and rework my model sheet for Otis Spatulus.  This one is a mixture of the ThunderCats style and some model sheet I saw as a reference for some Disney and Warner Bros. characters.

I figure I ought to share the reference material as well, so check it out!  What I really liked about these was the mixture of sketch and finished work, body turns and head turnarounds.  These are like Super Model Sheets!  I had to give it a go.

Originally I found those New ThunderCats model sheets on Facebook, but I'll link to some non-Facebook links to save you the trouble.  NOTE: If you are looking for Model Sheets from the original ThunderCats series from the 80's, check HERE.

These I found on Jessica Burke's Blog.

I ran into these on a cool Tumblr blog called Naiad Color Rites.

As for the Disney and WB inspired model sheet of Otis, here it is!
I sketched this one out kinda quickly after rediscovering some awesome sources for classic model sheets.

I found a few WB model Sheets at a blog called Cartoon Concept Design
though I scoured the net for better resolutions of a few of them.

I found some awesome Disney Model Sheets HERE at Disney Animation Archive.

Another WB set I found HERE at Cartoons, Model Sheets & Stuff.
If you are like me and have decided to become a Model Sheet junkie here are some more.

Overall I'm pleased with the result but I do notice things I'd like to improve.  Anyhow, thanks to you for checking it out!  Peep more progress and development of this Otis Spatulus and other characters at www.HIGHSPEEDWAFFLEMAN.com!

Paul Robeson Scholar Athlete Artwork

In 1997-98 I took and independent study course with great friends and talented artists Jennifer Johnson and Garrian Jones.  Dr. C. Keith Harrison is founder and director of the Paul Robeson Research Center for Academic and Athletic Prowess commissioned us to do illustrations that emphasized his vision for the scholar-athlete or as he would put it the "Scholar-Baller."

Scholar-Baller at a basic level means an educated individual that also participates in sport, art, music, or any other extra-curricular activity.  By combining "scholar" with "baller" a new identity in America and global culture is born.  Hence, this is what the Scholar-Baller and its Curriculum seeks to accomplish - bridge the gap between education, sport and entertainment.  This can only be accomplished by giving student-athletes, students, teachers, coaches, advisors, and administrators the tool and device that is unique, thoroughly researched, user-friendly, and culturally relevant to the world of our youth ad young adults.

I am extremely proud to have been a part of this program.  It was probably the most significant art I created while I attended U of M.  I still believe in the message today.  There are few people in history that amaze me the way Paul Robeson does.  What he was able to accomplish, and how he did it and when he did it was a seemingly impossible feat.  To this day, I am inspired and motivated to be more because of Paul.  This is work I believe is still on display in the Kinesiology Department of University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Sucker Punch Artbook...Score!

I won't pull any punches. (Bwa-haha! Couldn't resist!) I am stoked that I got my hands on a copy of  Sucker Punch: The Art of the Movie by Zack Snyder. This 256 Page Full Color hardcover wide-format book is nothing less than impressive.  Titan Books released two versions of this artbook.  One is a limited edition (750 copies printed) that is autographed by Zack Snyder himself for $75.00.  I think it also sports a signed print by concept artist Alex Pardee.  The other is the same book but for $34.95.  No signatures, no prints.

I had been checking it out on Amazon for about a week when I saw a user video of the artbook that pretty much sealed the deal for me....yeah!

The problem was, I had just purchased BlackSad the previous week and it would probably be hard to legitimize more art books this month.  Just for the record, BlackSad is probably my favorite graphic novel right now...no seriously.  It is phenomenal.  Check it out some of the BlackSad art here.  http://blacksad-gallery.blogspot.com/

But back to the subject at hand, I finally decided to go for it and buy it from Amazon but the price was now like $100!  I searched around for a while and couldn't find it for less than $70!  Well, people online were saying  it was out of print, which is really strange since the movie doesn't come out until this Friday.

Well, I finally found it at Barnes & Noble for $17.56 (With a coupon).  Ordered it and here it is!  Though I'm not so sure how I will feel about the actual movie, there is no doubt that the concept art is an unbelievable collection.

So if you get a chance to get it at a decent price, you won't regret it.

Oh, I suppose I shouldn't have a post without some of my own art, so here are some rough character sketches from a project I probably need to unearth soon.  Ah, the future...
Well until then, Enjoy!

Western Star Trucks

How goes it blog lurkers! This is what I've been working on for the last month or so at RTT. A fun project we got to do for Western Star Trucks. It was a nice change of pace to do work on trucks instead of cars. I got a lot of experience doing camera setup for all angles and another opportunity do do some lighting.

I personally did the lighting and rendering for the Reveal Image.
The original silhouetted image of the truck was done by Dave Hudson.
For the other shots I assisted by rendering out shadow, matte, and occlusion passes. For all of those shots, Cy Kelcavic and Conor Fitzgerald executed the Lighting, adding the Material Shaders and Passes. Rip Evans, Aaron Brothers, Matt Sommerfield and Jeff Bergmann did retouching on all shots.

It was great to be a part of this job.  Its too bad I didn't get a shot of the countdown screen that was a constant reminder of how long we had left to finish this. Yay teamwork!

We're Expecting Twins!!

For any and all of those who have been graciously following and checking my blog, I apologize for my lack of posting, but hey, for good reason!  My wife and myself are expecting twins in April! Saying that we are excited is an understatement.  Also to my amazement I am nearing the 6000 hit milestone for my blog.  It is an achievement that I appreciate and don't take lightly.  Thank you all for taking the time to visit!

Otis Spatulus Study

Another study of my main character, Otis Spatulus for my upcoming comic book, "The Adventures of High-Speed Waffle-Man.  Just taking some of the previous art a little bit further.  Ultimately I'll probably collect all of my pre-production in an artbook.  This was a ton of fun to do!  Hope you enjoy checking it out!

Color Treatment for Otis

Taking a little break from finishing up the script for issue #2 of High-Speed Waffle-Man to do a color treatment of our leading guy, Otis Spatulus.  He's kind of enjoying himself isn't he?
